Desuperheaters, sometimes called attemperation or steam conditioning, is the reduction of steam temperature. Its most common application is the reduction of temperature in a steam line through the direct contact and evaporation of water. Most Desuperheaters incorporate the venturi design which uses the velocity of the steam to atomize the cooling water and resulting in final steam flow at the desired lower temperature.
Although requirements for desuperheaters cover a widerange of applications, the great majority fall into the following standard installations:
●Power plant requirements for desuperheated steam supplying units having limited operating temperatures such as auxiliaries, heating systems, heat exchangers.
●Reduction and control of superheated steam, where excess temperatures will harm the product.
●Use on boilers, either between superheater stages or at boiler exit, to control superheat temperatures at partial loads.
●Use as bypass of bleeder to maintain balance between process steam and power needs.
●Use on turbine bypass systems reducing the temperature normally handled by the turbine.
●Cooler steam can require thinner pipe schedules or smaller flange classes than superheated steam. Aside from lower costs, desuperheaters can reduce lead times for piping, valves, controls, and other equipment during initial construction or shutdown maintenance.
In 1970, Hangzhuo Worldwides Valve introduced its first mechanical desuperheater in China, and in 1976 the venturi desuperheater was developed and successfully marketed to satisfy a wide range of applications.
